Embrace Uncertainty to Stop Self-Sabotage

Uncertainty

Confusion and uncertainty can be so painful.

It’s part of the human experience... But your brain hates it, so it’ll try to get out of it as quickly as possible — Usually, by self-sabotaging.

“I suck at this.” “People don’t like me.”

Your brain wants to reach a conclusion that it can hold on to, because that feels safe. The thing is though, when your brain is spinning out and confused, if you’re looking for something solid that feels “true,” you’re inevitably going to arrive on simply thinking the thing that you’ve thought the most often before.

“Things never work out.” “I’m weird.”

It’s usually an UNTRUE judgment or fear, but it FEELS TRUE because you have rehearsed the same thought SO MANY TIMES.

It’s easy to go to, which puts your brain at ease. But also makes you feel like shit. And freezes you in place as you retreat from the pain.

So the trick will be to allow yourself to experience the emotion of uncertainty, and widen your tolerance for how long you can feel it.

👉🏼 When you feel rejected, and you don’t know what happened...
👉🏼 When you’re not sure if an opportunity is going to work out...
👉🏼 When you don’t know if you’re capable of doing the big thing...

If you can only handle 20 seconds of uncertainty, you’ll quickly think a self-defeating thought and then move on, which ends up MAKING SURE things don’t work out.

What if you were WILLING TO FEEL CONFUSED for a few HOURS? Or a few DAYS?

What if you were like, “Well, this might be a confusing couple of days. Let’s tuck in. What’s our mental 911 kit? How do we survive when we’re having a hard time?”

You’re actually using your energies much more intelligently by being gentle with your process, whatever it might be.
